The challenge

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation operates the Canadian assets of one of North America's most important trade corridors, spanning five operational sites along the seaway, from its Cornwall head office to its Niagara operations.

Its collaboration platform was a legacy Lotus Domino environment: increasingly hard to support, disconnected from the Microsoft ecosystem its partners use, and a growing constraint on how teams work across sites. The seaway does not stop for an email cutover, so the migration had to respect that operational geography.

Our approach

BITSUMMIT delivered the move in two connected engagements: readiness first, then migration.

Two-stage migration flow for SLSMC from Active Directory readiness through Entra Connect, Exchange Online enablement, signed acceptance, and the Domino migration, designed by BITSUMMIT

Readiness proven first

The foundation stage covered a full Active Directory forest and site analysis, a Microsoft 365 tenant assessment, and a Microsoft Entra Connect design linking on-premises identity to the cloud.

Exchange Online enabled site by site

Exchange Online was enabled across the five operational sites, with a customer-signed phase acceptance closing the readiness stage before any legacy data moved.

Domino to Microsoft 365

With the foundation proven, mail, calendars, and collaboration data moved from Domino onto Exchange Online, Teams, and SharePoint while operations continued.

The outcome

Five operational sites now run on one Microsoft 365 environment, with identity linked cleanly from the established Active Directory into Microsoft Entra ID and the legacy Domino platform fully replaced by Exchange Online, Teams, and SharePoint.

The phased model - readiness proven and formally accepted before migration began - kept the program accountable from first analysis to final cutover.

A critical trade corridor moved off Lotus Domino and onto Microsoft 365, site by site, on a readiness foundation the customer formally accepted.
